Prevent fires on your property

You can play a big role in preventing wildfires. Check out these tips to safeguard your yard and keep your community safe.

How to prevent fires on your property

You can play a big role in preventing wildfires by keeping your own property fire free. Follow these simple steps to keep your home, yard, and neighbourhood safe.

  1. Clear your yard of brush, weeds, dry leaves, and dead tree limbs.
  2. Keep flammable materials away from your house. Store propane and firewood at least 9 metres from your home and away from heat sources.
  3. Clean your barbeque often and operate it safely. Keep a close eye on the grill while it's lit and keep kids, pets, and combustible materials a safe distance away.
  4. If open air burning is permitted in your region, avoid burning on windy or dry days. Always keep a shovel and a few buckets of water and sand close by to put out the fire.
  5. Water potted plants frequently. Dry potting soil can be a fire hazard. Try to water your plants in the early morning or evening when it's cooler and the water won't evaporate as quickly.

Now you have the tools to help prevent wildfires in your community, starting with your own property! Show the family enjoying their back yard – sitting on patio furniture, having some lemonade.
